A group of us stopped here for something to eat on a day out doing the Ale Trail railway trip from stalybridge to Huddersfield and found the service and food to be very good despite the fact we all had probably a bit too much...More

We decided to dine at The Olive Branch for the 3 course Sunday lunch (£20). Upon arrival we were seated in the dining room, which I was slightly disappointed by as the décor was a bit bright and sterile and it would have been nice to eat in the homely pub part at the front, but perhaps this is just for drinking. We both ordered garlic mushrooms with salami to start which was delicious and served with warm bread. For the main, I opted for the chicken roast and my partner went for the beef roast. The dish was nice but not as good as the starter in my option. Us Northerns do like our gravy, but the food was really swimming in it (see photo) and I think it would have been better served in a jug on the side, but that is just my personal preference. The veg was honey roasted and tasty and served with a large Yorkshire pudding. The best part of the meal was the amazing sticky toffee pudding, which I would highly recommend. Wow! The toffee sauce was incredible. All in all, this was a really enjoyable meal and I was so full I had to lie down for a couple of hours when I got home! More

We have been eating quite regularly at the Olive Branch for several years now without a problem. The service is usually good and the food excellent, if a little pricey. As members of the regular email mailing list, we received an offer for a free bottle of Prosecco (as usual for birthdays) as it was my wife’s birthday last week and so we decided to take advantage of this offer last night. However, my wife and I were subjected to a truly embarrassing and humiliating experience… She had ordered her fillet steak ‘medium’ and all seemed well until we were part-way through the meal when she discovered that the very middle of the steak was raw, not rare, but actually still raw. I pointed this out to not one, but two waitresses, and to be fair they both offered to have the remnants of the steak cooked correctly. But by this time, we were more than halfway through our meals and simply decided that the disruption this would entail was not worth it. It would have meant finishing my meal alone and then when my wife’s steak was returned, her doing the same. So, my wife simply ate the rest of the meal and left about one third of the steak on the plate. However, the bill arrived, and it was for the full price of the meal and so I simply asked if it was possible to receive a small token of recompense for what after all had been a disappointing meal for my wife. The waitress then left and fetched the person in charge, whom I presumed to be the owner, who proceeded to patronise me with reasons why she was not prepared to allow this.Firstly, she said that she was not aware of this problem, which due to her tone, I took as meaning that maybe she thought I was making it all up.Secondly, she then proceeded to tell me that they would have re-cooked the steak had we asked, and I then explained that we were asked and why we didn’t want to go down that particular route (as above.)Thirdly, she said (and I really could not believe my ears at this point) “Well, you have had a free bottle of Prosecco!”And lastly, she resorted to that old standby of anyone who has exhausted their excuse list, of… “Well, it’s not our policy…” At this point my wife and I had had just about enough and so I interrupted her with, ‘We’ll its not our policy in that case to ever come back here again.” So, we just paid the full amount and left. All this by the way, took place within the earshot of several other diners, which was totally embarrassing for us.Needless to say, we will keep our promise to her and never go back. There are plenty of other decent, honourable restauranteurs in the Colne and Holme valleys, who treat their paying customers with the respect they deserve.More

We've been to the Olive Branch a few times and whether its for Sunday Lunch, or a romantic meal the service here is brilliant and the food likewise. Offers great value and a fantastic setting. We've also been for Bonfire night which was outstanding offering a fireworks display for the little ones and great food as usual.

The restaurant has a great atmosphere and staff were friendly and helpful. Gorgeous meal with fresh tasty ingredients.

Stayed for three nights - staff were all very pleasant and helpful and evening meal was delicious with plenty of options.Rooms are a good size and beds really comfortable. Could have done with better lighting in the room as we only had bedside lights and one table lamp so it felt a bit gloomy.Would certainly stay again.

Lovely food but not enough. No mash. What's that about on a Sunday. Bit pricey. But lovely staff, gorgeous restaurant and beautiful location. Will definitely be back but will try different menu. Cosy and warm and friendly.

Lovely ambience on arrival with warm friendly staff however completely underwhelmed by the food. I ordered the crab gratin which presented like a soup in a crab shell lacked substance and looked very insipid. My main could have been great but daphanois potatoes were tepid...More

Just got back from a lovely Saturday night stay at the Inn on a dinner, bed & breakfast package. The room is a great size and cosy and the bathroom is nice and modern. Great power shower and although there was no shower gel provided there was shampoo and conditioner. The Inn itself is lovely and warm just like the friendly staff. The food was pretty perfect too both dinner and breakfast. I find it hard to understand the bad reviews on here - if traffic noise is an issue don’t book a room on a main road and if you want 5* service go to a high class restaurant not a gastro pub. For me I believe they have got everything spot on and we really loved our stay.More

I visited the Olive Branch as a party of 5, all of us felt a complete and utter sense of despondency when leaving. I have never experienced such levels of careless service, much of the food was not available, which we were not told until we were ready to order. My biggest issue came with the wine, we ordered several bottles between ourselves, these were simply dumped on the table and walked away from, no pouring into glasses, no chat, nothing. Furthermore, when members of our party changed from white to red, none of us were given or even offered different glasses. Again, the bottle was dumped onto the table and walked away from without a single word or care. This is a lack of training and understanding and is genuinely very disappointing. We had to remind members of staff that we had ordered drinks, and elements of each course had been forgotten, for example the port with the cheese boards. The food was not of sufficient quality to reflect the price, the lobster with the surf and turf was overcooked. An overall dreadful experience from unfriendly staff who made us feel unwelcome and as if we were an imposition to them. Your money can be better spent elsewhere.

Arrived here at 7pm on Friday after booking a table through the company's app. Booking was easy and offered a selection of times during the evening. We arrived about half an hour early and decided to find a nearby pub for a quick drink, there are a few nearby and the one we chose was warm and friendly.I drove back to the Olive Branch Inn on time and found parking behind the restaurant was a decent size and well lit. It is on a busy road so it is nice to park off road.We entered the restaurant and was welcomed by a very attentive young lady, who found our booking straight away (the app works!). We were brought to the small but cosy bar area to read the menus which were a printed a la carte and a fixed price menu.I ordered a gin and tonic for my partner and a alcohol free beer for me. A large selection of gin and quality tonics are available and the beer was really nice and a large bottle (no need to keep ordering Becks blue which goes in a few sips). We ordered a mix of a la carte and fixed price menu. Food came out of the kitchen well prepared and was presented really pleasantly. I had the Whitby Crab Starter and Belly Pork, my partner had Goats Cheese starter and Belly pork too. Both faultless and decent size portions. What really stood out for us was the service style. Staff were attentive and chatty but not intrusive. It is a sign of good service when you are served without feeling you are being served - we waited for nothing and were left to comfortably chat to each other about our week.Desserts were a must as they started serving Christmas pudding which I decided I was having since I arrived. It didn't disappoint, with a creme Anglaise that balanced the richness of the pud. My partner had sticky toffee which was a classic favourite that finished off the meal nicely.Card payments allowed for a tip which is always useful now that we rarely pay by cash. We left a healthy tip as the team deserved it and we left happy, knowing we will be bringing our friends back as it has been too long since we dined here.Well done it was 11/10 for us.
